Friends of HSMH Canada mobilizes supporters in Canada and directs philanthropic attention toward high-impact healthcare needs, building on the shared mission of Friends of HSMH.

What the hospital stands for
From an idea to a hospital
Hasan Suleman Memorial Hospital was established to create a sustainable healthcare institution serving underserved communities in Malir, Karachi. Friends of HSMH has supported this vision through community engagement, philanthropy, fundraising, and volunteerism.
Planning begins
The hospital concept began taking shape through discussions and planning.
A cause to unite behind
Following Hasan Suleman's passing in March 2022, supporters across the U.S., Pakistan and worldwide united behind this charitable healthcare initiative.
Groundbreaking
The groundbreaking ceremony took place on November 8, 2024.
Structure complete
By November 8, 2025, the nine-story structural framework was completed.
Doors open
Inauguration on 25 December 2026, with the first patient welcomed on 26 December.

Former President of APPNA and founding leader of multiple professional organizations. As Founding Chairman of HSMH, he brings vision and commitment to advancing sustainable, high-quality healthcare for underserved communities.

Iqbal Zafar Hamid, MD

A practicing Anesthesiologist in Florida and President of Friends of Hasan Suleman Memorial Hospital. Graduate of Cadet College Petaro and Sindh Medical College. He has held multiple leadership roles within his alumni association and local APPNA chapter, served as President of APPNA in 2018, and has been involved in initiatives such as the One Rupee School in Karachi and mobile health clinics across Pakistan.
“Over the past year, we have worked diligently across the country to mobilize fundraising efforts through gala dinners, community events, Iftar gatherings, our Ramadan Telethon, mailing campaigns, text outreach, and digital platforms.”

President of Long Island Psychiatric Associates and former Assistant Clinical Professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. Former President of the APPNA New York Chapter and actively engaged with DOGANA. Involved in numerous philanthropic initiatives in the United States and Pakistan, including PWA at Civil Hospital Karachi and Friends of Indus Hospital. Trustee and Secretary of Friends of HSMH since its inception.

Qazi Kamal Haider, MD

A graduate of Sindh Medical College who has practiced privately in New York for over 30 years. Since HSMH's inception he has served as Treasurer and Trustee, managing Sadqah and Zakat funds with honesty, diligence and transparency: documenting every transaction, minimizing costs and monitoring expenditures closely.

Akhtar Hamidi, MD

A graduate of Sind Medical College (Batch of 1984) with over 27 years in psychiatry, focused on underserved communities. He provides tele-psychiatric services at a Friends of HSMH Free Clinic in Karachi, has served as President of JSMUAANA and of the APPNA Arizona Chapter, and is committed to providing regular tele-psychiatric services once HSMH opens in December 2026.

A board-certified internist in Queens, New York, with over 20 years of experience in Internal Medicine, including chronic disease management, preventive medicine and patient education. A graduate of Sindh Medical College (JSMU), with residency and chief residency at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and in practice in Queens since 2003.

Former President and Chief Medical Officer of QDx Pathology Services, which he founded in 2006. He held academic appointments at Mount Sinai Medical Center and Columbia University, has served as President of APPNA, DOGANA and NJ APPNA, and joined the HSMH Board in 2023, viewing HSMH as a passion project for quality healthcare in Malir, Karachi.

Mansoor Alam, MD

A graduate of Sindh Medical College and former President of the Sindh Medical College Alumni Association. He served as Office Chair through APPNA and, as a former Trustee of HSMH, now serves as Executive Director overseeing day-to-day operations and the successful execution of the hospital's mission.
